By successfully completing this course, you will:

  • Gain skills and knowledge to work for a gym or become a freelance fitness instructor
  • Be awarded the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise)* – a nationally recognised qualification, regulated by Ofqual in England
  • Be able to join CIMSPA
  • Gain the prerequisite qualification that leads to our NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

Course overview

Fitness is a booming industry. This course looks at good practice in fitness instructing by working to a common standard which is nationally recognised, and aims to enhance the status of employees within the fitness industry.

The course will help you to find employment in the fitness industry. You will learn the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective fitness instruction sessions in the gym. You can earn money from your enjoyment of health and fitness, and meet and work with interesting people.

The course is ideal if you are seeking:

    • employment in the sector
    • access to CIMSPA
    • recognition for previous experience
    • to develop skills and knowledge in the sector

Syllabus

Our training is split into six units:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Instructing gym-based exercise

Practical training

To gain the NCFE Level 2 qualification, you will need to successfully complete a portfolio of work and submit recorded practical training sessions (for example, in DVD format) of your planning and instructing a client, and demonstrating the required competences to organise fitness instructing programmes. A qualified person will need to be present during the training session.
